Questions

Common questions ·

Never skied before — how long a lesson do I need?

Start with a half day (three hours). Most beginners come out of it able to do a snowplough stop and basic turns, which is enough to get down a green run on your own. If your trip is three days or longer, a second half-day on day two makes a noticeable difference.

Do the prices include lift passes and rental?

No. The listed price is the instruction fee, tax included. Lift tickets, equipment and clothing rental, transport and accommodation are all separate. The pre-trip briefing includes rental shops and which lift pass to buy at each resort, so you don't end up with the wrong ticket.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to three weeks for off-peak dates; four to six for peak season and the Christmas and Lunar New Year windows. Holiday slots often fill before the season even opens, so if your dates are fixed, ask early.

What age can children start?

Four and up for skis, seven and up for snowboard. Under four, stamina and attention span usually don't last a full session, and pushing it tends to put kids off. For family lessons we assign instructors who are used to children and run the session as play.

What if the weather is bad on the day?

Snowfall itself doesn't stop a lesson — it's usually the best snow you'll get. We only cancel if the resort closes the lifts for high wind or a storm and the session can't be run safely, in which case you get a full refund or a free reschedule.

What language is the lesson in?

Chinese throughout. Instructors explain the technical detail directly in Chinese, so nothing gets lost through a translator.

Can I book as a solo student?

Yes. One and two people fall in the same price band, so a solo booking is a full private lesson with the pace entirely set by you.

Do I need to bring my own gear?

No. For a first trip, rent everything — skis or board, boots and helmet are all available at the resort. Nothing to check in, and no risk of buying gear that doesn't suit your level. Helmets are mandatory, not optional. Bring your own gloves, goggles and a wicking base layer.

First Time Skiing? What You Need to Know開く / Read

First-timers usually fall into one of two camps: too excited to sleep, or quietly thinking about backing out. Both are completely normal. A ski slope is genuinely unfamiliar territory, and that first moment on the board is a little unsteady for almost everyone. What we can tell you is that nearly every student who's learned with us has left the mountain with a smile — even after a fair number of falls.

Take a lesson. Don't wing it.

We've seen it many times: someone says "I pick things up fast, I don't need a lesson," and then slides sideways across a gentle slope and startles half the run. The issue isn't courage — it's going out there without knowing how to stop, which is a risk to yourself and everyone around you. A three-hour lesson covering the snowplough stop and basic turns makes an enormous difference to how the whole trip goes.

Gear: rent first, decide later

Boots matter most. Well-fitted boots make your movements accurate; boots that are too big are like running in shoes two sizes too large — exhausting and uncontrollable. For a first trip, rent everything (skis or board, boots, helmet). No checking luggage, no guessing what level of equipment you need. Helmets are mandatory, not optional.

Layering: waterproof > warm > stylish

You'll sweat skiing, and then you'll get very cold when you stop. Cotton loses all insulating ability once wet — use moisture-wicking base layers (wool or synthetic). For the outer layer, waterproof matters more than thickness. When you fall in the snow, that shell is your protection. Goggles are more practical than sunglasses on bright days, especially with reflected glare off the snow.

Sunscreen is not optional

UV intensity at altitude is two to three times higher than at sea level, and snow reflects it straight back at your face. We've had students return from a first day looking like lobsters. Apply SPF 50+ before you leave accommodation, and keep lip balm in a pocket.

The unwritten rules of the slope

Whoever is in front of you has right of way — regardless of how slowly they're going, you go around them. Leave at least ten metres when setting off behind someone. Stopping in the middle of a run, particularly at blind spots, is genuinely dangerous for the people coming from above.

Skis or Snowboard? Honestly, There's No Right Answer開く / Read

It's the question we get from almost everyone. Some people have already made up their minds; others genuinely have no idea — and for the latter, we usually suggest trying skis first. But that doesn't mean snowboarding is harder. It's just a different kind of hard.

The learning curves are frustrating in different places

Alpine skis: Most people can slide down a gentle slope and roughly control direction within the first few hours. The snowplough stop is fairly intuitive — especially while you still have the instinct for staying upright. Smooth, flowing turns take longer, and "didn't fall too many times" might honestly be the first day's highlight.

Snowboard: The first two days almost always involve a lot of falling. The heelside edge is where nearly every beginner gets stuck. Wrist guards are essential; hands instinctively go out in falls. But once it starts to make sense, the feeling is genuinely different, and many people find they're hooked right around that moment.

When we suggest skis

For families with young children, we almost always recommend starting on skis. Kids aged three to four respond more naturally to having their feet independent — the pizza stop is intuitive at that age. For adults coming with no prior experience, skis let you figure out what skiing feels like first, and then decide where to go from there.

When snowboarding might suit you better

People with a surfing or skateboarding background often transition to snowboarding more quickly — the rotational body movements and weight-shifting feel similar. If you've tried skis and they've never quite clicked, it's worth trying a board instead.

The honest answer

No one can choose for you. But if you're genuinely undecided, talk to us before booking — we'll give you an honest read based on what you're hoping to get out of it, not just tell you what sounds good.

What Age Can Kids Start Skiing?

We've taught a lot of children — from three-year-olds up to teenagers. The three-year-olds often learn faster than their parents, and not because they're especially talented. It's because they don't think about falling. They just fall, and then they get back up. Adults tend to stiffen up trying to avoid it, which is actually the bigger obstacle to learning.

What age can they start?

Three years old is generally when most children can begin on alpine skis. Some resorts officially require four, but the honest answer is that it depends on the child — some three-year-olds are completely willing to try; some four-year-olds simply aren't in the mood that day, and forcing it helps no one. Skiing should leave good memories. If the first experience ends in tears, it becomes very hard to rebuild a positive relationship with the mountain.

Why skis and not a snowboard?

Because the feet stay independent. Children walk and run with their feet separate — the pizza stop is naturally intuitive at this age. A snowboard requires both feet locked on the same board, then coordinating the whole core and hips to turn. That's too abstract a physical concept for a three-to-five-year-old.

Gear to pay attention to

Helmets are non-negotiable. Boots must fit properly; never buy a size up to save money or "leave room to grow." Oversized boots can't support the ankle, which means the child can't control the skis — more falls, higher injury risk. Hip protectors (lightweight kids' versions) are worth bringing.

How long should a session be?

Two hours is typically the limit for young children. Pushing past it gives very little return and costs a lot of goodwill. Ending on a high note, with the child still wanting more, sets up the next day far better.

A note for parents

Don't measure the first day by how much they learned. Some of the children we've taught spent most of day one just stomping around in the snow — and were gliding down gentle slopes by day three. If your child is smiling out there, willing to try, willing to stand back up — that's the whole point.

What Makes Hokkaido Powder Different?

Many people who ride into Hokkaido's deep powder for the first time stop at the bottom of the run — and then go straight back up for another. Not for any technical reason. Just the feeling. The resistance is low enough that the board slips through almost silently, and the sensation is entirely unlike a groomed run. People who've been skiing for years elsewhere come here and say this is what they'd been looking for.

Why is Hokkaido snow so dry?

Geography. In winter, cold air pushes out from Siberia across the Sea of Japan — which is large enough that the air picks up significant moisture on the crossing. When those clouds hit the mountains of Hokkaido, they rise rapidly, cool, and release snow. Because the air mass itself is extremely cold, the resulting snow crystals are exceptionally fine and dry — very low density.

How low, exactly?

Typical European Alps snow sits around 150–200 kg per cubic metre. Utah powder, famous for being light, is around 80 kg. Hokkaido in good conditions can drop below 50 kg per cubic metre — light enough that a handful feels almost like nothing. This is where the term "JaPow" came from: a shorthand for Japan Powder that's become a kind of pilgrimage word in the global ski community.

When's the best time to go?

Mid-to-late December through February is the most consistent window. January and February are the peak — at Rusutsu and Niseko, snowpack depths above five metres are routine. Trees along the runs get buried to the point where only the crowns are visible, which is genuinely striking the first time you see it.

About the changing climate

Warmer winters are affecting some resorts — lower-altitude runs in particular are seeing shorter seasons. If powder is specifically what you're going for, choosing higher-altitude or more northerly resorts (Rusutsu, Furano, Niseko) gives you a better buffer. It's just something worth factoring in when you're planning.

Calling this a "lazy guide" is a bit of a stretch, because a few parts of a Japan ski trip will genuinely punish you for not planning ahead — particularly in peak season. But outside those pressure points, it really doesn't have to be complicated.

How long should the trip be?

For a first trip where you actually want to learn, five to seven days is a reasonable target. Build in two or three days of lessons, leave the rest for practising on your own, and keep some buffer for the unexpected — mountain weather changes fast. The most common mistake is over-scheduling. Skiing is physically demanding. Mixing shopping days, city sightseeing, and full ski days in the same week usually means neither thing gets done well.

Getting there from Taiwan

Direct flights to Sapporo New Chitose Airport take around three and a half hours. Sapporo Teine is close to the city and reachable by JR — the easiest logistics of any resort on our list. Rusutsu and Furano require another hour or two by shuttle or private transfer. If your trip is short, choosing a resort closer to New Chitose saves meaningful time and energy.

What to bring

Skis, boots, and helmets are available to rent at reasonable prices — don't feel obliged to bring your own. What you do need: waterproof ski jacket and trousers, thick gloves, goggles, and proper base layers. Cotton base layers become useless once wet. Pack three or more pairs of thick wool socks — boots don't dry overnight.

Budget expectations

For a rough four-day estimate per person: return flights from Taiwan run NT$8,000–15,000; accommodation roughly ¥8,000–15,000 per night; equipment rental and a lift pass together around ¥10,000 per day. For lessons, sharing a session with two or three people brings the per-person cost down considerably compared to one-on-one.

When to book

For peak season — January, February, Chinese New Year, Christmas — book lessons at least a month ahead, and accommodation two to three months out. We have had peak season dates fill up completely, particularly around Chinese New Year. Off-peak is much more relaxed; two weeks' notice is usually fine.
